The latest installment of the Doc Adams Birthplace Classic took place Saturday, September 25, 2021 in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire.
Due to recent wet weather, the games were moved from Lamson Farm to nearby McCollom Field. However, Saturday was a top 10 weather day and even with the change in venue, it was another outstanding event! The Dirigo Base Ball Club of Maine and a picked nine from several northeast vintage clubs entertained the cranks in attendance with their skills and love of the game. One of those cranks was Nancy Adams Downey, great-granddaughter of Doc Adams.
The Doc Adams Birthplace Classic is an annual (cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic) celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Daniel Lucius Adams, an early founder of base ball and native son of Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. This event is conducted both with and for the many fine players who engage in 19th Century Base Ball in the Northeast and beyond, in support of the push for the rightful enshrinement of Doc Adams in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
The late great-granddaughter of Doc Adams and biggest advocate for his Hall of Fame candidacy, Marjorie Adams, was remembered and honored with a moment of silence.
Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams was born in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire on November 1, 1814 to Daniel Adams, MD and Nancy Mulliken Adams. He and his family lived there until 1846 when they moved to Keene, New Hampshire.
The Doc Adams Birthplace Classic which originated as the Doc Adams Invitational in 2016, was first held in Doc’s hometown of Mont Vernon, New Hampshire in 2017. The Birthplace Classic is now part of the annual Lamson Farm Day. Lamson Farm Day, the last Saturday in September, is a Mont Vernon day of festivity at the Lamson Farm with displays by various groups in town.
